Empty Frames

about

You ever been to the far south end of Guelph where all the new housing developments are? Or most of Vaughn?
It's the shittiest kind of development there is - hundreds of houses that look EXACTLY the same.
Developers come in, clear out the forested area.. build the houses, AND THEN THEY PLANT TREES AGAIN, but only a couple in the front yards. LITTLE CRAPPY TREES.

Think of cities now - when you look at old houses in Guelph and think "this is really nice". Is that going to happen in another 50-100 years? No and it sucks.
I put the blame square on planning commities/municipal government, or provincial government who approves this bullshit. Maybe the regulations are already tough, but not tough enough.
Developers make a killing - they can still do honest business and make our communities a little bit richer too.

After writing Empty Frames, I heard the song "Little Boxes", you know the one at the start of Weeds, and thought it caught the sentiment of this song even better.
Go listen to little boxes.

lyrics

Another sign hangs on a gate holding a name like Forest Creek
Giving concrete a face. Where people think they've found their Dreams
Rip up, old growth forests for the roads, then plant again all in a row
Wonder why the kids who live here are on drugs

All these houses, containers to frame us
On the outside, they all look the same so
Look around you, something's gotta change

Take a tip and hear what I say. Take a trip down Suffolk way
Keep a line but if you turn your head you'll see community not Development
Rip up, historic landmarks for the roads then build again, all in a row
And wonder why the kids who live here are messed up

All these houses, containers to frame us
On the outside, they all look the same so
Look around you, something's gotta change

Making sure, you feel hopeless
Making sure, you feel broken
Making sure, you're no trouble
Making sure, you don't speak out
On the inside, no-one can paint us beige.

I believe, in fifty years we'll look back on it
and we'll just tear down what we had done
To save some money but at what cost?
